Data export and exit

Last updated 29 September 2026

Your apps, their data and your domain are yours. This page says what you can take when you leave Orbit, how to get it, how long you have, and what it costs. It costs nothing.

What you can take

  • Your app's data. Every table and every row in your app's own Postgres database, including your end users' accounts. Passwords are there only as PBKDF2-HMAC-SHA256 hashes, never as text.
  • Your app's files. Everything your app and its users uploaded.
  • Your app's definition. Its pages, workflows and data model, as a manifest bundle: one manifest.json and one JSONL file for each page, workflow and data model. It is the format orbit sync reads, so a copy you keep can also come back.
  • Your domain. It is registered to you, not to us. Point it somewhere else whenever you like.
  • Your account data. Your profile, members, usage and billing history, under the privacy policy.

How to take it

There is no export button yet. Until there is, three of the four routes below are done by hand, by the two of us.

  • Read your data yourself. Every running app serves its tables through its own REST API, described by an OpenAPI file on your domain. You can page through every table with no fee and no limit beyond your hosting size.
  • Ask for a database dump. Email [email protected] from an owner's address. Within 5 working days we send a PostgreSQL dump that restores into any PostgreSQL 18 server.
  • Ask for the app bundle. Same address. We send the manifest bundle within 5 working days.
  • Ask for your files. Same address. We send them as one archive within 5 working days.

What does not come with it

  • The runtime. The bundle describes your app. The software that runs it is Orbit's, and it is not licensed for use anywhere else. Your data and your data model move with you. The screens and workflows have to be rebuilt on whatever you move to.
  • The secrets you stored. You hold the originals of the API keys and tokens you gave Orbit. We delete our copies with the app.
  • Sign-in sessions. Your users sign in again on the new system. A system that checks PBKDF2-HMAC-SHA256 hashes keeps their passwords working. Any other system asks them to reset.

When you leave

  • You can stop at any time. Stop an app or close your account whenever you like. There is no notice period, no exit fee and no charge for switching.
  • Credits are not refunded. Credits you have not used stay non-refundable, except where the law requires a refund, as section 9 of the terms says.
  • A stopped app's database is kept for 30 days. That holds whether you stopped the app, it lost the free slot to another app, or your balance stayed unpaid past the 7-day grace window. Before the app's server is removed, we take a full dump of its database. We keep that dump for 30 days, and then it is deleted. Ask for it at any time in those 30 days.
  • Deleting an app works the same way. The app's live data is removed at once, and its last dump is deleted 30 days later. If you want the dump gone sooner, email us and we delete it.

If we close your account

If we suspend or close your account, for non-payment or for a breach of the terms, you still have the same 30 days to ask for your data. The only exception is when a law, a court or a security risk stops us.

If Orbit shuts down

We will tell every account owner by email at least 90 days before the service stops. Apps keep running through those 90 days wherever we can keep them running. Before anything is deleted, we send every owner their database dump and their app bundle.

Customers in the EU

The EU Data Act (Regulation (EU) 2023/2854) gives customers of cloud services the right to switch provider and take their data with them. Orbit asks for no notice to leave, where the Act allows up to two months. You have at least 30 days to retrieve your data after an app stops. We charge nothing to export or to switch.
